Environmental Impacts of Proper Recycling
Our eco-friendly battery disposal ensures we keep drivers, and the environment safe.
95% Recyclable
Lead-acid car batteries are among the most recyclable products globally. Almost every component—lead, plastic case, sulfuric acid, and separators—can be recovered and transformed into new products, primarily new batteries.
Prevents Toxic Contamination
Batteries contain lead (toxic heavy metal) and sulfuric acid (corrosive). Improper disposal allows these substances to leach into soil and groundwater, causing long-term environmental damage and health risks.
Closed-Loop Manufacturing
Recycled lead from old batteries is refined and used to manufacture new batteries. This closed-loop system conserves natural resources, reduces mining impact, and saves energy compared to primary lead production.
Australian Leadership
Australia recycles approximately 98% of car batteries—one of the highest rates globally. By recycling your battery through The Battery Centre, you contribute to this environmental success story.
We work exclusively with EPA-certified recycling partners who follow strict environmental regulations. Every battery is tracked, processed safely, and recycled to Australian standards.
What Gets Recycled
Lead (60-65%): Smelted and refined for new batteries
Plastic case (15-20%): Melted and formed into new battery cases
Sulfuric acid (15-20%): Neutralised or converted to sodium sulphate
Separators: Energy recovery or landfill (minimal waste)

Frequently Asked Questions | Battery Recycling Sydney
Is battery recycling really free?
Yes, completely free. You can drop off old batteries at our Summer Hill (26 Liverpool Road) or Kingsford (479 Anzac Parade) stores anytime during business hours—no purchase required, no fees. If you buy a new battery, we automatically collect and recycle your old one at no extra charge.
Can I drop off a battery without buying one?
Absolutely. While free recycling is included with every battery purchase, you’re welcome to drop off old batteries even if you’re not buying from us. We believe responsible recycling should be accessible to everyone, regardless of where you purchase your replacement battery.
How much of a car battery is recyclable?
Approximately 95% of a lead-acid car battery is recyclable. Lead (60-65%), plastic case (15-20%), and sulfuric acid (15-20%) are all recovered and reused. This makes car batteries one of the most successfully recycled consumer products globally—Australia recycles about 98% of all car batteries.
What happens to the recycled materials?
Recycled lead is refined to 99.9% purity and used to manufacture new battery grids, terminals, and posts—most new batteries contain 60-80% recycled lead. Plastic cases are melted and formed into new battery cases. Sulfuric acid is either neutralized to create gypsum (used in cement) or converted to sodium sulfate (industrial chemical). Almost nothing is wasted.
Can I recycle motorcycle or truck batteries?
Yes, we accept all lead-acid batteries for recycling: car, motorcycle, truck, marine, deep cycle, AGM, flooded, gel—any rechargeable lead-acid battery. The recycling process is the same regardless of battery size or type.
Why is it illegal to throw car batteries in regular bins?
Car batteries contain toxic lead and corrosive sulfuric acid. Disposing them in regular waste leads to environmental contamination when these substances leach into soil and groundwater. In Australia, improper battery disposal carries significant fines. Lead-acid batteries must be recycled through certified facilities to protect public health and environment.
What should I do if my battery is leaking?
If your battery is visibly leaking acid, do not transport it yourself. Call us and we can arrange safe collection as part of a mobile battery replacement service. Leaking batteries require special handling to prevent acid burns and environmental contamination. Never attempt to clean battery acid without proper safety equipment.
